No More Arkansas Politics as Usual?
Yesterday the Times Record Online posted this: Governor May Face Bigger Challenges In Second Term- “…already at the start of his second term, some lawmakers appear unwilling to tow the what-Beebe-wants-Beebe-gets line.” Well this is good news, yes?
Looking like some of the new guys might have a few new ideas. For those of us interested in limited government, fiscal responsibility and free markets, this is a good~ Only time will tell how it all pans out~
This story taken directly from the Arkansas Democrat Gazette:
A White County judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by royalty owners who say they are victims of an illegal exaction and are being taxed twice for natural gas being produced from their property.
The Daily Citizen reports that Circuit Judge Tom Hughes dismissed the suit on Friday. In April, royalty owners Kenneth Joe and Mary May sued the county’s tax assessors and collectors, asking that property taxes on royalties be declared invalid as an illegal exaction.
The royalty owners claim they have paid property taxes on their royalties and natural gas companies have paid severance taxes on the same production. But Hughes ruled that the taxes had been levied only after the natural gas had been sold.
Hughes ruled the timing of the property taxes didn’t matter.
